We carry those who came before us
It is not lost on me that where I am today is not only a result of my choices, but also a result of my mom and dad’s, and those who came before them.
Their sacrifices, their dreams, their traumas have trickled their way downward through the generations.
There is a connection across generations beyond just genes. Consider what has been passed down to you, such as resilience, traditions, ways of caring, how love is shown, or lessons learned.
Some things inherited may be difficult, and we can choose what we nurture and what we allow to change with us.
Close up of “The Ones Before Me” painting
“The Ones Before Me” is a meditation on ancestry, inheritance, and the invisible threads that connect us across generations.
This painting is a part of the collection titled “A Remembrance of Our Interconnectedness” - my latest art collection that speaks to our shared humanity and interwoven existence. And each painting comes with a poem offering.
“The Ones Before Me” painting from the “A Remembrance of Our Interconnectedness” collection
The Ones Before Me
My life is vertical
As much as it is horizontal
A product of the choices
And sacrifices
Of the lives lived
Before me
Through my mother and father
And the ones before them
In my bones
Are my ancestors
Enjoy a short guided meditation to reflect on the generations that came before you, what you carry forward, and what you choose to nurture in your own life.
