Marks Upon Each Other

We mark one another…

My 3 year old nephew came out of daycare with stamps all over his face and body. His daycare had offered an art activity with stamps that day, and apparently, my nephew and his buddy decided it would be so much more fun to stamp each other than on the provided papers.

Though a very literal example, we essentially do walk around with figurative crayons and stamps in our hands making marks upon one another.

Some are loving marks. While others are wounds that hurt.

They surface in relationship. These marks are made in relationship. And can heal in relationship.

Consider that there may be someone walking around today carrying something you gave them. Maybe it was a kind word, encouragement, a listening ear, a gesture. You may not even know it mattered. But it may have left a mark.

What a more beautiful world we can create if we can strive to color more mindfully and from a place of love.

“Marks Upon Each Other” is a painting that reminds us to consider the marks that we leave upon others, and ones others have left upon us.

This painting is a part of the collection titled “A Remembrance of Our Interconnectedness” - my latest art collection that speaks to our shared humanity and interwoven existence. And each painting comes with a poem offering.

Marks Upon Each Other

They say we wound in relationship

And we heal in relationship

Perhaps we’re all walking around

With crayons in our hands

Making marks upon each other

Lite invisible tattoos

Etched on the heart
